23nd Annual TWI High School Ethics Essay Contest

Topic:  "Dear President Elect, May I Suggest..."

 

Announcement and Contest Rules

WHO: Open to all students enrolled in an 11th or 12th grade class at participating high schools

WHEN: Essay must be submitted online to The Williams Institute on or before the contest deadline

DEADLINE: Friday, December 9, 2016. (Start date for submissions is Monday, November 7, 2016)

WHERE: Submit essays at www.ethics-twi.org. Look for Essay Contest in navigation bar.

HOW: Contest rules for eligibility:

  • Essay must be 600-800 words in length. 
  • Student must respond to all of the components of the prompt 
  • Essay must be the independent work of the student. 
  • Essay must be submitted as a Microsoft Word document. 
  • Answers to essay questions MUST be in colored font: (q.1-orange, q.2-bright green, q.3-turquoise, q.4-pink, q.5-red).

CRITERIA: Essays will be judged on the basis of a thorough and well-organized response to all bulleted components and the ability to explore and discuss the ideas and ethical concepts that support his/her position. No particular ethical perspective will be imposed on the entrants, so students are encouraged to express themselves freely. Judging will be conducted in stages: (1) initial screening of submissions that all rules are met and selecting the top 10 essays for each eligible group; (2) judging the written essays by a committee of community leaders narrowing the competition to finalists for each grade level (11th and 12th) at each school; (3) conducting interviews with the finalists to better understand each student’s perspective.

CONTEST PRIZES: A cash scholarship of $500 will be awarded to a winning senior at each eligible participating school and a cash scholarship of $300 will be awarded to a winning junior at each eligible participating school. Winning essays automatically will be entered in the State-wide contest. The  Senior State Winner will  receive an additional $1,000 scholarship and the Junior State Winner will receive an additional $700.00 scholarship.
